Precision Engineering Meets Growing EV Demands
For over 65 years, norelem has been a trusted name in the mechanical engineering industry. Today, as the electric vehicle (EV) market rapidly grows, norelem is helping companies innovate to meet this demand. A recent example comes from EMBE Machining, a precision engineering company based in Markgröningen, Germany. EMBE leveraged norelem’s standardized components to create a cutting-edge measurement device for testing cable insulation in EVs, setting new benchmarks for efficiency and accuracy.
EMBE’s Expansion into EV Solutions
Since its foundation in the 1950s, EMBE Machining has specialized in precision milling, turning, and drilling, offering advanced solutions to industries such as automotive, medical engineering, and electronics. Recognized for its highly accurate measurement tools, EMBE was tasked with developing a device capable of testing the insulation of EV cables—components critical to vehicle safety and performance under extreme conditions.
Accurate insulation measurements are essential to help automakers develop more compact cabling systems. This not only enhances vehicle efficiency but also aligns with sustainability goals through resource conservation.
The Innovative Measurement Device
To meet this challenge, EMBE designed a device that assesses insulation performance by applying test voltages to two wires. One wire is incrementally moved closer to the other until an electrical arc breaches the insulation. When this occurs, the current flow signals failed insulation.
Achieving meaningful results required precision under various parameters such as position, voltage, and temperature. The mechanics of the device were engineered for a wide range of motion, while maintaining a repeatability of ±0.02mm—ensuring consistent and reliable testing.
The Role of norelem Components
Approximately two-thirds of this innovative testing device was created using norelem’s standardized components. Key elements included norelem’s steel parallels, lift and positioning tables, and reference plates, all of which contribute to the device’s ability to deliver precise insulation testing under various conditions.
- Positioning Tables: These tables form the heart of the device as they provide precise X, Y, and height axis adjustments required for accurate sample positioning.
- Steel Parallels and Reference Plates: These components ensure proper alignment and a stable testing platform.
Additionally, a custom solution replaced the adjustment handle with a ratchet similar to a micrometer screw, ensuring samples are consistently tested with a standardized approach to the block.
Advantages of norelem’s Components for EMBE
The use of norelem products has brought significant benefits to EMBE, enabling seamless design and manufacturing processes. Michael Pieske, EMBE’s project manager, highlighted three major advantages:
- High-quality Products: norelem’s parts met the stringent demands of EMBE’s testing requirements.
- Ease of Access: The intuitive online shop and extensive CAD database provided comprehensive specifications, streamlining decision-making.
- Cost-efficiency: Purchasing standardized components was far more economical than manufacturing custom parts.
“For instance, the spindle-driven guide carriage required for this project would have cost at least 400 euros to manufacture in-house, making norelem’s solution a more viable option,” noted Mr. Pieske.
Streamlining Project Timelines and Costs
norelem’s products also enabled smooth integration into EMBE’s design workflow. Free downloadable CAD models supported every stage of the 3D modeling process. By displaying these models on secondary monitors, EMBE engineers could evaluate stock availability, compare alternatives, and finalize designs in record time. This streamlined their operations significantly, reducing lead times and enhancing cost efficiency.
A Partnership for Future Growth
The collaboration between norelem and EMBE underscores the value of standardized components in driving innovation. EMBE now considers norelem one of its core suppliers, relying on its vast portfolio for custom fixtures and in-house production. This partnership has accelerated EMBE’s ability to deliver cutting-edge solutions, helping its customers achieve competitive advantages in the evolving EV landscape.
By merging expertise, efficiency, and sustainability, norelem and EMBE continue to set new standards in precision engineering for the electrical vehicle sector.
